We are proud to be able to offer forest school sessions at Explorers in our two extensive woodland areas. We are lucky to have three members of staff holding the level 3 qualification in forest school leader. This means we can lead several sessions a week for all ages from baby room to preschool.
Each session has a group of around 16 children who consistently take part in a 2 hour session in one of our woodland areas. We use the forest in all weathers so appropriate clothing is a must.
Over the weeks the children build a community of respect. They build confidence, take risk, learn new skills, teach and encourage others and develop a multitude of skills and abilities.
They learn about the values of the forest. They learn how to respect and care for the environment and all the creatures living in it. They learn new skills like lighting and cooking on the campfire persevering and problem solving alongside their teachers. They increase physical strength and dexterity as they learn to tie knots and build dens. They take risks as they learn to use tools safely and for a purpose. They build relationships as they join in with games and share triumphs and thoughts. They build resilience as they are exposed to challenging conditions and new experiences. They learn and help to set out new rules and boundaries and support each other in following them. The benefits of forest school are never ending and that is why it will always be part of our ethos and what we do at Explorers.
