Music + Art Room

Our Music + Art room has been thoughtfully designed to provide a rich, inspiring environment where creativity, curiosity, and confidence can grow.

As a dedicated space separate from the main rooms, it offers children the opportunity to engage deeply with music and art experiences without interruption, supporting sustained shared thinking and meaningful exploration.

Music plays a central role within the room. Children are encouraged to explore sound through a variety of instruments, including drums, shakers, bells, and percussion resources. These experiences support listening skills, rhythm, coordination, and early mathematical understanding through patterns and repetition. Group music sessions promote social development as children learn to take turns, listen to one another, and respond together. Familiar songs and rhymes are used to support language development, memory, and emotional security, while new music introduces children to different cultures, tempos, and styles.

Dancing, action songs, and rhythmic movement

Movement is also closely linked to music in this space. Children are given opportunities to move freely to music, developing balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. Dancing, action songs, and rhythmic movement help children to express emotions, build physical confidence, and connect with music in a whole-body way.

Art experiences are carefully planned to be open-ended and child-led. We provide a wide range of materials, including paint, pencils, chalks, pastels, natural materials, recycled resources, clay, and collage items. Children are encouraged to explore these materials independently, making choices about how they create and what they wish to express. The focus is always on the creative process rather than the finished product, allowing children to develop resilience, independence, and a strong sense of self.

Mark-making is a key feature of the room, supporting early writing skills and fine motor development. Children are offered opportunities to draw, paint, and experiment with different tools and surfaces, building strength and control in their hands while exploring patterns, lines, and shapes. These experiences lay important foundations for later writing in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

A place of joy, imagination & creativity

Sensory art experiences are also an important part of the Music + Art room. Children explore textures, temperatures, and materials using all of their senses, supporting brain development and helping them to make sense of the world around them. Natural and reclaimed materials are often used to encourage curiosity, sustainability, and connection to nature.

Practitioners play a vital role in supporting learning within the Music + Art room. They observe closely, follow children’s interests, introduce new vocabulary, and gently extend experiences through questioning, modelling, and shared exploration. Children are encouraged to talk about their creations, developing language, confidence, and pride in their achievements.

The Music + Art room supports all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, with a strong focus on the Prime Areas of Learning. It promotes communication and language through singing, conversation, and storytelling; physical development through movement and fine motor activities; and personal, social, and emotional development through collaboration, self-expression, and confidence-building experiences.

Above all, the Music + Art room is a place of joy, imagination, and creativity. It allows children the time and space to explore who they are, how they feel, and how they see the world — celebrating every child as a capable, creative learner.
